Looking into AFMC, Pune for MBBS?

All That You Need To Keep In Mind; From Eligibility Criteria, Admission Process And How to Apply To Differentiated Lifestyle

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune is one of the finest medical colleges in the country. It was set up by the Indian Armed Forces in 1962 and was the first Asian medical college that had been set up by the armed forces. It is a reputed medical college thatcovers all aspects of medical education- UG, PG and PG Diplomain medical and nursing. In fact, AFMC, Puneeven offers special Super- Speciality and Para Medicaltraining exclusively for armed services candidates only.

It is a very different and unique medical college that is a phenomenal combination of a doctor’s and a soldier’s lifestyle. Being an army medical college, life here is glorious and differentiated. Here each student is not only a doctor but a cadet too. The fundamental idea of AFMC, Pune was to train doctors to treat soldiers of Indian defence forces both on and off the battlefield, and so it does.

The daily routine of students in AFMC, Pune is different from that of ordinary medical college students. Here students are not only under the weight of heavy medical books and lab work. No, here army style physical training is a very big part of a student’s curriculum. Even the life after AFMC, Pune is differentiated as all graduates are expected to serve as short service commissioned officers, if you don’t wish to then you have to pay a total of Rs 15 lakhs to the college as per a bond that you have to sign at the time of admission. Just like all defense forces colleges, AFMC too takes care of a student’s overall financial needs like fees, hostel, food, books, and other expenses, hence the bond amount is justified.

AFMC, Pune is a truly differentiated experience of a medical college. If you like the lifestyle you can even chose to be a long-term commissioned officer after the completion of your MBBS or opt for a specialization master program of 3 years duration in AFMC, Pune itself.

Admission process:AFMC, Pune now does its admissions for undergraduate MBBS courses based on aspirants merit and performance in The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Under Graduate(NEET) examination, conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) every year. Just like NEET UG 2019 examination, NEET UG 2020 will be conducted by NTA in traditional pen and paper mode and it will not be a computer-based exam unlike NEET PG examination, which is digitally conducted by National Board of Examinations(NBE). NEET 2020 will take place onMay 5, 2020(tentative).

Then the shortlisted candidates are invited for a second round of screening at AFMC, Pune campus. This screening includes a Test of English Language, Comprehension, Logic and Reasoning (ToELR), Psychological Assessment Test (PAT), Interview and another Medical Examination that matches the Indian army standards. All this takes places around June/July, after the result of NEET is announced.

Here is a little insight into the screening process:

  • ToELR is the first test you need to take. It is of 80 marks .Your score of in ToELR is never revealed, even after the selection. It is a basic test which has English comprehension(10 marks), General English comprising of phrases(30 marks) ,basic rules of English, synonyms and antonyms. Hence just basic knowledge of English language is required. Mathematics is basic too. No complex formulas required. But a good understanding to mathematics up to class 10 is required.
  • Psychological assessment test is not a rating test in itself, more like prep for the interview. It’s score doesn’t add to your merit. It comprises of 60 situations and you are required to rate them on a scale of 1 to 5. A complete report of this test is presented on the table of each member of the panel during the interview. Your answers are cross questioned, hence be truthful and justified in your ratings here.
  • Panel Interview is an elongated interactive session headed by the Dean ( Major General) of college. Have a little knowledge about your area and a little about ranks of army and other defense forces. Also be updated in current affairs.

The final merit is a summation of your NEET score +ToELR score and Interview score.
